The Suez Canal Authority (SCA), established on July 26, 1956, is an independent public authority with its own juristic personality. Reporting directly to the Prime Minister, the SCA possesses all the necessary powers to operate the Canal without being restricted by governmental laws and systems.

The SCA is responsible for managing, operating, maintaining, and improving the Suez Canal. It exclusively issues and enforces the navigation rules and other regulations to ensure the Canal runs smoothly and efficiently.

Additionally, the SCA has the authority to establish, support, or participate in projects related to the Canal. To fulfill its duties and obligations, the SCA can own and possess land and real estate, rent out its properties, and hire others’ land or real estate for Canal-related purposes. These purposes include employee welfare and the establishment of projects and utilities, such as water stations and power plants, that enhance the Canal’s performance.

The SCA, as an Egyptian state-owned authority, took over from the Suez Canal Company following the nationalization of the Canal by the Egyptian government in 1956. Its headquarters is located in Ismailia, Egypt.

The SCA is also responsible for collecting tolls, ensuring the safety of canal traffic, and maintaining the canal infrastructure. It operates a fleet of ships and boats, including tugs, dredgers, and pilot boats, to support navigation and safety. The SCA provides various services such as ship repair, maritime ambulance services, fueling, and waste disposal.

In recent years, the SCA has focused on enhancing the canal’s capacity and promoting environmental sustainability through initiatives like the “Green Suez Canal” project.
